The Foundation

It took a while to lay out the foundation for the temple. The Los Angeles temple shows each building block, and so I used those as my guide. I counted each block as being two LEGO studs wide. Once I figured out the dimensions, it was time to lay out the bricks.

The base of the LEGO temple requires four gray baseplates. I used 4x12 plates to temporarily keep the four baseplates together. Each of the 4x12 plates would be later replaced by green plates to simulate grass.

The first couple of times I laid the foundation, I used bricks that were only one stud wide. When it came time to put the roof tiles on, it became very apparent that I needed bricks that were two studs wide for structural integrity. Another revision took place in Studio.

The foundation for the courtyard (where the reflecting pool and main entrance are) is two bricks tall. The reason for this is because there are steps that lead up to the courtyard. It should go without saying, but I'll say it anyway, it does not matter what color the bricks are that will not show when the piece is finished. Early on, I had to decide if I wanted to build in the entrance to the baptistery. I quickly decided not to when I figured out that I would need to make the foundation at least four blocks tall (since the entrance is under the temple).

This foundation view is from the south, or the front of the temple. On the left will be the chapel, and the right will be the cafeteria and the loading dock. The middle area is where the reflecting pool will go.
