The East Wing

Building the east wing was almost identical to the west wing, just mirrored. The exception to this was the outside part of the wing (east side - not facing the courtyard). Instead of an emergency door being in the back of the cafeteria, there is a loading dock. Also, the outside wall leading to the main building (large center part) has a different window layout.

When I build the wings the first couple of times through (yes, there were quite a few restarts because I kept seeing details I hadn't noticed before) I made the roof flat (outside wall the same level as the inside wall). When I noticed the roof on both wings were layered (the outside 2/3 is lower than in the inside 1/3, approximately), another redesign took place.

The stud length between the two walls (courtyard wall and outside wall) was an odd number so I decided to run a line of bricks (two studs wide) between the two walls. This made it possible to attach plates from both sides and easily make them different heights. I also paid closer to attention to the brick stacking of the walls. Once I did this, the different roof levels were natural.

The other challenge was the loading dock. I needed to tie that part of the building into the cafeteria so it was one piece instead of two (the first couple of tries, there was a split in the blocks between the two buildings which just seemed wrong!).

For the roof supports near the main entrance building, I had to beef those up to support the weight that would later be placed in that area. That was pretty simple, I just used 1x2 bricks and made a block for the plates to attach to.
